Project 90 Soccer: Marco, we are live, brother. Welcome to another episode of the Project 90 podcast. My name is Antonio, and I'm joined by my brother driving his car, headphones in, shades on, looking fly as fuck. Marco Munoz. Marco, how you doing?
Marco: What is cracking, baby? Yeah, man. We we on the road. we just finished watching the third place game. And boy, did we watch two games in one.
Project 90 Soccer: Unbelievable, Marco. Look, I have one question for you, bro. One question to start this off. It's gonna be short and sweet, but look, we're talking about Cristiano and Messi being the GOAT, but I mean, let's be honest here. Kylian Mbappe, okay, is he the World Cup GOAT?
Marco: Eleven goals? I mean, I think he's a World Cup GOAT, bro.
Project 90 Soccer: I mean, it's kind of undeniable at this point. He broke the record for most goals ever in the World Cup, man. He has 22 goals in all World Cups total. That is insane. You know what I mean? Messi right now sitting at 21. So yes, he has a chance to break it tomorrow in the final, but Mbappe, still only 28 years old, I believe, he has another World Cup, right, to play in. So
Marco: One hundred percent.
Project 90 Soccer: I think it's safe to say I think it is safe to say that Killing Mbappe is the goat of goats when it comes to the World Cup. That is his tournament.
Marco: mean in the first half alone it was just him and Olysse holding it down for for the French.
Project 90 Soccer: Exactly, man. It's kind of shocking, right? In the first half we saw England four to zero, going to the half four to zero, which seemed like France was just asleep, right? And then the second half came along and it's like it completely just did a Uno reverse card. You know what I mean? France just came out kicking. A lot of substitutes were made, like we thought. The game the starting lineups were a lot different. Cherokee's starting. There was a lot of different players in there for France, a lot of different players in there up top and on the wings for
Marco: Getting it. Mm.
Project 90 Soccer: England, but I mean man, this game for a minute there seemed like it was gonna go one way and then France just absolutely did a one eighty on us, you know what I'm saying?
Marco: Yeah. Yeah, the version of France that we saw in the first half, with Cherokee on the starting lineup, I don't ever want to see again. That for the amount of complaining that Cherky did early on in the group stages, the beef with De Champs, he had a terrible first half. And obviously we spoke about in the previous episode. I wanted to see all the starters right off the rip, but rightfully so, DeShamps and Tuchel both gave opportunity to other guys to get some playing time in the third place game and let's you why the starting guys are the starting guys.
Project 90 Soccer: It does, man. It became very apparent very quickly. a lot of players. Cherokee had a terrible game for France playing in that number ten role. Deschamps took care of that immediately. Look, you know, for a third and fourth place game, I'd say that this one lived up to the expectation. I expect these games to be exciting. It almost felt like one of those charity matches you see where it's just a lot of goals, a lot of entertainment. And I'd have to say that this this game was definitely entertaining. So Mbappe sitting at twenty two goals, obviously now tomorrow, Lionel Messi, arguably the GOAT of all players of all time. Do you think, quick prediction, he breaks that twenty two gold record tomorrow and holds it for the next four years?
Marco: I think he holds it for the next four years. tomorrow is a huge stage. It's a championship game, champion of the world. And a lot li Leonel Messi he's he's built for these moments. And I think tomorrow he he breaks the the record he holds it for the next four years.
Project 90 Soccer: I agree. I think he's gonna have a big game tomorrow. That's besides the fact though. Today we saw a beautiful third and fourth place game. It's very exciting. Olise had a mi f a fantastic game. Dembele coming on had a great game. All the players that we wanted to shine did. Bellingham came on late, had a massive impact. We saw Sokka get a hat trick and convert a penalty, which we know in the past has been a struggle for him. But you know, it's it's a it's a nice way to close out your tournament with a win. Third place, heading back to England with a dub. France took a little bit of a of a nosedive at the end of this tournament, but safe to say that I think they'll be fine when the next World Cup rolls around.
Marco: And and what do you think about if Rashford and Sokka would have started last game for for England? And I and I know we don't want to go back and talk about what happened in the previous match, but just imagine if those two guys were in the starting lineup, would we have been talking about England in the final tomorrow?
Project 90 Soccer: Yeah, you know, that's a a valid point. I think everybody right now that's an English fan is probably asking that because Sokka was dangerous on there. Rashford on the wing. I mean, it just offered a whole different dynamic to the English attack. Obviously, Bellingham didn't start, but you can imagine if Bellingham and Kane were in there with Rashford and Sokka, I think the results against Argentina would have looked a lot different, right? A lot different. but unfortunately, you know, it's it's too late for them. I think Rashford and Sokka both made a good case that they should have started last game, but the pass is in the past. I think Tuchel Tuchel signed through the next Euros. So I think when the next Euros come around, he's going to have a different starting lineup. I think he's gonna hopefully use these players. Hopefully they stay in form over the next two years till the Euros. but yeah, I think this was a massive learning lesson for England. and yeah, it's kind of one of those one of those moments with a little regret, right? The little what if moment, what could have happened if they played, but again, it's it's over, it's done. The third and fourth place game is over. Now we have we have the pleasure of looking forward to the final tomorrow. Argentina, Spain.
Marco: Got I got two things. More so one thing. Olise, I'm talking to Olise here. Olisse, bring your shooting boots next time. Cause boy, you could not hit the net to save your life today. You're very well great at assisting the ball, but man, you cannot put it down the net.
Project 90 Soccer: Hit it. Mm-hmm. Yeah, notable mention to Elyse. He couldn't score a goal. Talk about having all the opportunities in the world. But one thing that Elise did do is he broke the the assist record for France. He got seven assists this tournament. It's the most of any French player ever. So he might not be putting him in the back of the net, but he definitely got the assists. He made up for it there. But if he can if he can get those scoring boots on. Talk about having like a lethal weapon on your team for real, man. Cause if you could get seven assists, he could have put two goals in today. They could have won that game today. They could have easily won today. And, you know, throughout this tournament, we've seen him miss some big opportunities, but at least they're getting some assists out of him. And I think the argument of should Cherkey play has kind of been killed after today, because he just had no enthusiasm. I said in previous episode, that guy's got an attitude on him. I he just does not look like he wanted to be there. And you know what, man, I I'm really happy that Deschamps took him off. I didn't think he deserved to be on that field wearing the French jersey. And I'm I'm glad that Elise and those other players got on. And you know, Elise took his position back in the middle, and I think is deser deserved to be quite frank. So yeah, man, exciting game. Anything else you want to add before we close it out?
Marco: Nah man, exciting game. definitely two games in one what what we watched today. these guys play their ass off in the second half and we'll we're moving on to tomorrow.
Project 90 Soccer: Moving on tomorrow till tomorrow, man, the final World Cup final, MetLife Stadium, Spain versus Argentina. Guys, if you listen to this whole episode, really appreciate it.
